As an editor at WIRED, I remember the day back in 2016 when Bruce Schneier published an eerie post titled "Someone Is Learning to Take Down the Internet." A few weeks later, I remember being in the office when a massive DDoS attack took down 175,000 websites for millions of Americans across the Eastern seaboard and other large swathes of the country. It all seemed part of an unsettling drumbeat leading up to the 2016 election. But then I remember the outrageous, almost unbelievable reveal: That these colossal cyberattacks—wrought by a huge botnet called Mirai—were the work of three college-age guys who'd come from the world of Minecraft.
