Masahiro Sakurai is known to be one of the hardest-working developers in the video game industry and many have wondered when he will say enough is enough and decide to retire. However, he’s relatively upbeat at the moment as “work is coming in now (there is demand)” so he wants to run with that, but when his “spirit starts to break” and he feels he can not meet that demand then he will have to reconsider things. Here’s what was said to Famitsu via machine translation.
“He says that when either “Is there a demand?” or “Can I meet that demand?” falls apart, he will consider it time to retire. However, he says that his current situation is “very unfortunate, but I’m able to work very hard.”
“On the other hand, he is feeling the “decline” in various parts of his body, and his eyes get tired easily, which is quite noticeable.”
“Work is coming in now (there is demand),” so “the only question is when will my spirit break?” But that doesn’t mean that “it’s okay to keep repeating this,” he says, and he also thinks that “it’s definitely not.” This is because “people have to change stages.”

Nintendo recently held its investors question and answer session to talk about the Kyoto-based company’s business. Surprisingly the legendary developer Shigeru Miyamoto wasn’t present at the event and a note states that Mr. Miyamoto was unwell and he’s expected to recover in a few days to a week. Hopefully nothing to worry about, but it’s unusual for Mr. Miyamoto to miss the event but these things happen from time to time.
“Representative director and fellow, Shigeru Miyamoto, was absent due to sudden illness. However, Mr. Miyamoto’s condition is currently stable, and he is expected to recover in a few days to a week.”
