You've probably heard of Larp—ornately dressed people in a field brandishing swords, that sort of thing. But chances are you've yet to grapple with Nordic Larp, the genre's psychological wallop of an offspring. In these extreme games, players can spend days immersed in dark, heavy themes, imagining themselves in places such as a slave plantation or an internment camp; there's even a Nordic Larp called Gang Rape. As they say, sign me up.

Last fall, he flew to Denmark to join a game called The Future Is Straight, where he role-played as an insecure gay teen attending a camp designed to stamp out his sexuality. The game got messy, and Anthony found himself sinking, fast, into his character's tortured psyche. There's Larp sex. There's a crying spree. And there's a reckoning with what seems to be an enduring human need: to touch misery, briefly. To sip from the cup of terror, and then to set it back down. – Sandra Upson | Features Editor
