Headlines AI software nearly predicted Omicron's tricky structure (WIRED) As soon as the WHO designated Omicron a "variant of concern" late last November, experts began working to map the new mutation. At the time, the first software capable of accurately predicting protein structures had only just become widely available. Thanks to these new developments in AI, experts were able to map Omicron's unique protein structure more accurately, a potential indicator of the ways algorithms will inform experimental work going forward and even inform the development of new treatments. Some immune-compromised people will start receiving fourth shots this week (The New York Times) As early as this week, some immune-compromised people can receive a fourth vaccine dose per CDC recommendations. When the CDC signed off on third doses of the two mRNA vaccines for immune-compromised people last August, they said these shots would be considered part of the initial course for those individuals. As such, those people can now receive a booster dose, their fourth shot, consistent with recommendations for other adults. Last week, the CDC shortened the interval for receiving this booster to five months for recipients of the two mRNA vaccines. Protests erupt across Europe over new vaccine mandates and restrictions (Deutsche Welle) Amid the Omicron surge, many countries in Europe are considering more stringent restrictions and vaccine mandates, which led to numerous protests last weekend. In Prague, thousands spoke out in opposition to a potential move to make vaccines mandatory for people over 60, as well as for medical staff, police, and firefighters. In Germany, protests over a new vaccine mandate were also met with counter-demonstrations, as thousands took to the streets to protest the anti-vaccine actions. |
