The 2018 legalization of recreational cannabis in California seemed to mark the dawn of a new cannabis boom. Wanting a piece of it, Tushar Atre, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur who had found some success starting an early corporate web-design firm, aimed his money and his talents at revolutionizing cannabis extraction. But the boom was not without complication–or danger. On October 1, 2019 Atre was abducted from his home in Pleasure Point, California, and found dead among his own marijuana plants. What happened? This is the story of a battle being waged not just between the legal industry and an incumbent black market, but also between the coming corporate behemoths and the independent underground business people who have defined the industry since the beginning.
