Good morning, In 1996, Netscape founder and future venture capitalist Marc Andreesen appeared on the cover of Time magazine. Netscape's recent IPO had made the then-24-year-old internet wizard fabulously wealthy overnight, but he claimed not to care about money. He also didn’t seem to care much about his appearance. In the photo, he’s sitting on a red velvet throne in jeans and a wrinkled black pullover, with his feet completely bare. At the time, the cover caused a wave of tut-tutting and eye-rolling from traditional business types. But Andreesen knew what he was doing: showing the world that he was a carefree non-conformist who didn't have a moment to waste on petty concerns like, you know, shoes. Andreesen’s shoeless gambit has snowballed into one of the strangest (and most unsightly) phenomena of the internet age: the “candid” barefoot CEO photo. Read our story for a look at some other high-profile examples of this unbelievably bizarre business trend. |
