Delta puts kids at risk, the EU restricts US travel, and India's vaccine supply grows. Here's what you should know: Headlines The Delta variant is making Covid a pandemic of the young Last Friday, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Rochelle Walensky called for school districts across the country to abide by the agency's coronavirus guidelines, including universal masking, distancing, and vaccination for those eligible. Twenty-two percent of US cases reported in the third week of August were children, double what it was at the start of the month. With the school year starting, experts are concerned about protecting kids. Though the young appear to have more-battle-ready immune systems, the speed with which Delta can move through an unvaccinated population means they're still vulnerable to disease. The EU will reimpose travel restrictions for American tourists The European Union will recommend travel restrictions for visitors from the United States, removing the country from the region's "safe list" of places from which people can travel without needing to quarantine or meet more extensive testing requirements. Ultimately, member nations get to decide whether to impose the restrictions. Most European countries allowed American travelers starting in June despite high infection rates. To the ire of many, the United States has yet to reopen to travelers from Europe. India's vaccine supply increases as it hits a vaccination milestone Now that more than half of the adult population in India has received at least one Covid shot and the country is manufacturing more and more vaccines, there is hope that it will resume exporting doses within months. In the middle of April, India stopped exporting vaccines to focus on inoculating more people and driving down infections at home. At the time, it had donated or sold 66 million doses to nearly 100 countries. Now, new production lines are being set up, and the Serum Institute of India, the world's biggest vaccine maker, is making AstraZeneca doses at a monthly rate of more than double its April output. Daily Distraction Looking at yourself on Zoom can be incredibly weird. After 18 months of it, some dermatologists are noticing a worrying trend: Zoom dysmorphia. Something to Read Anti-vaccine misinformation has relied on many of the same tropes and plot devices for over a century. These make otherwise ill-founded ideas seem legible and familiar. So what if, instead of addressing claims after they've been made, we tackled misinformation by preempting its underpinnings? Sanity Check It's never too late to start getting organized. Across the country, many people are entering a new phase of uncertainty. They're returning to a workplace or classroom operating under rules that are all but guaranteed to change. If you've been working from home and your employer has announced that the office will be reopening even just a few days a week, we have some tips for preparing to head back in. It might be a good idea to outline a morning routine and try practicing it in advance, especially if you have family members who all need to get on the same page. A morning routine tracker can also be helpful for figuring out how to get everything done before you leave for work because you can't check small tasks off the list throughout the day. And if there are coworkers you like more or less, consider asking your boss to tailor your schedule—it's socially acceptable to say you want to socially distance. Above all, it's important to remember that even if you're going back to the same office, your work life will look different than it did pre-pandemic—and that's OK.
