Pfizer and BioNTech say their vaccine works in kids, the US relaxes travel restrictions, and American Samoa has its first case. Here's what you should know: Headlines Pfizer and BioNTech say their vaccine prompts a strong immune response in kids Early this morning Pfizer and BioNTech announced that their vaccine is safe and effective in children ages 5 to 11. The companies plan to apply for emergency use authorization from the FDA by the end of the month, which means millions of elementary schoolers could get their shots before the end of October. The drugmakers have yet to release detailed data and the results of the trial haven't been peer-reviewed or published in a journal. But in the announcement they said that children produced high levels of antibodies with just a third of the dose given to adolescents and adults. Trial results for children under 5 aren't expected until October at the earliest. The US will allow fully vaccinated travelers from the UK, EU, and elsewhere The White House has announced that starting in November the US will relax Covid-19 travel restrictions for those entering the country. At that time, fully vaccinated travelers from the UK, the EU, Ireland, China, Iran, Brazil, South Africa, and India will be allowed into the US with proof of full vaccination and a negative test within 72 hours of their departure. This will end the stringent travel restrictions that were put in place by the Trump Administration at the start of the pandemic. American Samoa records its first-ever case of Covid-19 A year and a half into the pandemic, American Samoa recently reported its very first case of Covid-19. The case comes from an asymptomatic traveler who was fully vaccinated and in mandatory quarantine after returning from a trip to Hawaii. People entering the territory are required to get three negative PCR tests—10, five, and two days before traveling—and this person tested negative before arriving. At present, just over 48 percent of the territory's population is fully vaccinated. Because Delta replicates quickly, there's a higher chance that even vaccinated people can shed some of the virus while their bodies are fending it off. The best way to secrete less virus, thereby protecting others and yourself? Wear a mask. If you're immune-compromised, you should be wearing a mask in any indoor setting outside of the house and any outdoor setting that's crowded or brings you into very close contact with people for an extended period. And anyone on school grounds should mask during the day, per CDC guidance. As for vaccinated people with properly functioning immune systems, masking indoors is advisable if you're around people from outside your household or in areas with substantial or high transmission—which, right now, means most of the US. Outdoors, the CDC says you only need to mask when you're in a crowded area with high transmission or are close to others. And it's important to remember, too, that high quality masks make a difference.
