Good morning, The American fireworks industry is starting the summer strong, but the road to recovery isn’t over yet. Roughly 11,000 Independence Day fireworks shows are scheduled to take place around the U.S. this year. That’s a stark comparison to 2020, when Covid restrictions shut down all but two dozen official pyrotechnic shows. Companies that rely on those events lost up to 90 percent of their annual revenue, while sales of backyard fireworks skyrocketed. While more sparks are going to fly this year, numbers are still below pre-Covid levels--about 16,000 shows took place in 2019, according to industry group American Pyrotechnics Association. Shipping delays and product backlogs threaten to keep a lid on consumer fireworks sales. And many of the country’s approximately 150 professional display companies are multigenerational family businesses, rather than large conglomerates, meaning it may take them much of the summer to get back on their feet. Read our story ahead of Independence Day to learn how the family-owned fireworks industry is planning its grand return. |
