| What you can learn from Google’s and Apple's plans to return to the office |

This summer, as many office buildings remained nearly empty and CEOs grappled with the question of bringing back remote workers to shared spaces, an unofficial "reopening" date emerged among companies such as Google, Facebook, and Uber: July 2021.
Epidemiologists say a return to business as usual by then is wishful thinking. Even if a Covid-19 vaccine is approved by then, it’s unclear how effective it’ll be--and how quickly and easily it can be produced and distributed on a national scale. So why is July 2021 such a common target? In the simplest terms, it’s psychological: Extending a remote-work policy a full year allows employees to better plan their living and working arrangements--and crucially for some, their children’s school year--before having to return to a desk.
In other words, July 2021 isn’t necessarily a firm or concrete deadline. But the process by which it was selected--which included a host of factors, like observations about competitors, customer surveys, analysis of behavioral trends, and social media activity--remains full of takeaways for small-business owners pondering the same reopening questions.
