Gardening is a leisure-time pursuit reserved for the elderly, right? Happily retired with an acre of land, idling away the days trimming the trilliums and propagating the peonies. I moved to London as soon as I graduated from university and got a job. Ever since, the idea of a private outdoor space has been a distant dream. I've filled the void by joining the Instagram masses and adorning my place with indoor greenery. I even tried to grow herbs from a window box. One day our canal-side apartment was subjected to a heavy downpour and I watched on helplessly as my basil and sage uprooted and plunged into the open water. Yet the desire to develop my green fingers, grow my own food, and enjoy the mental health benefits of being a 'plant parent' remain. I'll be honest, the only work Slack channel I check every morning without fail is #plantchat. Thankfully, there is hope. Say hello to home hydroponics, the soil-free system to give wannabe gardeners a sleek, high-tech way to grow produce like bell peppers, lettuce, and tomatoes from the confines of their own home. |
