But first, here's this week's big story: | Today, the Department of Justice announced that it will file an appeal to reinstate the federal mask mandate on planes, trains, and other forms of transportation. The move comes two days after a federal judge in Florida struck down the mandate, a decision that led transportation providers—including Amtrak and several airlines—to immediately stop requiring passengers to wear face coverings while in transit. In a statement yesterday, the Centers for Disease Control reaffirmed that its mask mandate is "lawful" and that people should continue to wear masks on indoor transit. The agency also asked the DOJ to appeal this ruling. Amidst this flurry of activity around mask mandates at the federal level, other leaders are taking the opportunity to reaffirm their stance on face coverings. Regional World Health Organization officials said masks are still highly encouraged, and New York City's Metropolitan Transit Authority doubled down on its requirements.
