Here's what you should know: | Headlines Shanghai records its first Covid deaths during the current wave (ABC News) Today Chinese officials reported the country's first three Covid-19 deaths of the current outbreak in Shanghai, saying the people who died were all between the ages of 89 and 91 and unvaccinated. But some people are skeptical of the official death toll in Shanghai, which is lower than other cities, with experts saying they think the country could be attributing other Covid deaths to underlying medical conditions. The CDC updates its travel advisory system (Washington Post) The CDC changed its international Covid-19 travel advisory system today, reserving Level 4 warnings for countries facing urgent situations where people really should not travel regardless of their vaccination status. Thus far, Level 4 has been used more liberally in the CDC's weekly updates of countries travelers should avoid. The three lower-level warnings will still be issued based on recent case counts in those countries. For mRNA, Covid vaccines are just the beginning (WIRED) Dozens of clinical trials are now underway for mRNA vaccines designed to treat illnesses such as malaria, Zika, and even herpes. This follows the success of Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna's mRNA coronavirus vaccines, which were the first of their kind to be widely administered.
