It's been a tough start to the year. But to take the edge off, we're basking in the glow of our computer screens as we join the all-digital CES. (If you’re curious about the future of gaming, come join Cecilia D’Anastasio and me for a panel this afternoon at 4 pm ET/1 pm PT at wired.com/hq, our virtual CES headquarters!) That aside, take a little time to read our interview with Ken Williams, the cofounder of Sierra Online, one of the first major video game companies, about his career, his memoir, and of course, what it was like to be a pioneer in game design and development, along with his wife, Roberta Williams, who cofounded Sierra with him. Maybe something more recent is your speed? Our review of Omori, a fantastic psychological horror game that reminds me (and author Julie Fukunaga) of titles like Yume Nikki and Undertale. Even if you’re not necessarily into scary games, this one might be worth checking out. Speaking of games that give you complicated feelings, Esther Mollica has a great roundup of the postapocalyptic games that got her through the pandemic, through 2020, and ready for 2021 and whatever it might hold. It’s a super personal story about how the games she discusses influenced her real life, and if you’re the type that thinks post-apoc games are depressing, think again. Our gear team just updated our PC build guide, as well, so if you’re thinking about building a new PC to play all of these great games on, we have tips for you there too. Are you planning on building a PC this year? Maybe once new video cards are … well … actually available? Let us know your dream specs at games@wired.com. And to keep receiving this newsletter, just sign up here. ☢️ Postapocalyptic video games saved me from pandemic despair. Normally games that take place after the world has ended are dreary, depressing, and make you think about the human condition. Esther Mollica turned to them during the darkest days of the last year and found they made her stronger, happier, and more resilient. 💾 The rise of Sierra Online wasn’t exactly a fairy tale. Sierra Online was one of the first game companies with a name that people remembered and recognized. It pioneered some of the world’s most beloved games, but as quickly as it rose, it fell into obscurity. Ken Williams, one of the founders of the company, talked to us about Sierra and about his new memoir. 😴 Omori is the horror RPG of your dreams (or nightmares). Creeping psychological horror? Check. The feeling that something’s just wrong and you don’t have a clear picture? Check. An addicting experience you have to unravel? Check. Omori has a lot going for it, and we think you’ll enjoy it. 📹 A game livestreaming site has become an extremist haven. During the terrorist assault on the Capitol last week, a number of the rioters streamed their activities live, some of them even pulling in donations for their rampage. But they didn’t stream on Facebook, Twitch, or other services that cracked down on such media—they streamed on a site called DLive. 🛠️ Want a better PC? Try building your own. Updated with new information, new parts, and new suggestions, our complete PC build guide will help you spec out the rig of your dreams, or just the rig you need to get things done, all within your budget. |
