Good morning, Entrepreneurship has always been in Wilma Mae Basta’s blood. Her father, Philadelphia civil rights activist Stanley Branche, ran several businesses while Basta was growing up--and, she says, was fearless when standing up for the small guy. Her mother, also fearless, encouraged young Basta to take risks. “I was taught not to be fearful--and that I, despite the challenges, I should go for it anyway,” Basta tells Inc. “To be an entrepreneur is to embrace fearlessness.” In 2017, after 10 years in the PR industry and one failed startup, Basta launched DRK Beauty, a digital community hub for women of color around topics like beauty and fashion. She spent the next few years growing the company--until this past April, when she woke up one morning anxious about Covid-19 and its impact on Black and Brown communities. Specifically, she worried about the pandemic’s mental health ramifications, and quickly came up with an idea: Give away free therapy. “I had no idea how to do that,” she says. “But I like to figure problems out.” Read our story to learn how Basta solved that problem--and what she plans to do next with her newfound network. |
