Biden declares the pandemic "over," 27 killed in Chinese quarantine hotel-bound bus crash, and Japan prepares to reopen. Here's what you should know:
Headlines Biden says the Covid-19 pandemic is "over" while some experts push back (NPR) In a televised interview last night, President Biden proclaimed, "the pandemic is over." He added that while Covid-19 is still a problem in the US, people and society seem to be returning to pre-pandemic ways of life. Still, experts responded to the president's statement by noting that hundreds of Americans are still dying from Covid every day. Additionally, the administration is still trying to secure more funds from Congress to bolster pandemic initiatives. 27 are killed in a bus crash en route to Chinese quarantine facility (NBC) In the early hours of Sunday morning, a bus bound for a quarantine facility in southwestern China's Guizhou Province crashed on an expressway. The accident killed at least 27 people, and 20 more were sent to be treated at a nearby hospital. A hashtag about the accident was a top trending topic on Chinese social media, with many expressing anger and frustration about the country's severe zero-Covid policies. It is unclear whether those onboard the bus were heading into quarantine because they themselves had tested positive or because their close contacts had. Japan is soon expected to fully reopen (Nikkei Asia) In the coming days, Japan is expected to announce that it will no longer require visas for short-term foreign visits, and that it will get rid of limits on the number of daily arrivals allowed. The country's borders stayed largely shut until last spring, when foreigners started to be allowed in if they complied with strict requirements, including booking travel through approved tour companies. These changes are likely to go into effect in October, provided the state of the pandemic doesn't change dramatically before then, as officials attempt to boost the country's economy.
