Good morning, Ask a simple question--Who inspires you?--and you’ll get a multitude of answers. For Black History Month, Inc. is reaching out to notable Black founders from our magazine and website’s archives to do exactly that. The responses have been fascinating. Prince. Amanda Gorman. Kamala Harris and Stacey Abrams. Mothers, brothers, family members of all kinds. And the stories behind the names are particularly revealing. Take Ras Asan, co-founder of BREAUX Capital, an online savings platform and mobile app that featured on Inc.’s 30 Under 30 list in 2018. For Asan, Nipsey Hussle wasn’t just a rapper--songs like “Overtime” and “That’s How I Knew” actually changed the way Asan thought about business, and informed the way he built his company. Daymond John’s inspiration comes from a more personal connection. When the FUBU founder and Shark Tank investor was a child, he and his mother would drive folks from the subway to the bus for 50 cents apiece. He went on to have a rideshare business. When they were short on money, she taught him how to sew. The hats he sewed 10 years later launched FUBU. She’d ask him, a dyslexic kid, to read her the Wall Street Journal as she cooked dinner. Today, he’s a professional investor. Every story we’ve heard so far has its own little bit of magic, so check them out below--and keep your eyes peeled for more stories of inspiration as the month unfolds. - Daymond John learned the art of the side hustle--and to never, ever settle--from watching his mother. He’s still learning from her today.
- How Kamala Harris, Stacey Abrams and Amanda Gorman inspire this Chicago entrepreneur to fight harder for social change.
- She worked for Prince. He inspired her as an entrepreneur: “He believed in the power of Black women.”
- No millionaire role model? No problem. This founder got all the inspiration he needed from the owner of a junk-hauling business--his older brother.
- “There’s a shift in the zeitgeist right now that’s almost palpable”: Inspired by Nipsey Hussle, he’s helping Black Millennials start saving.
