The CDC announces plans to restructure, boosters are coming soon for Americans, and the Marshall Islands face an outbreak. But first, here's this week's big story:
Concentrated oxygen could be the key to treating long Covid There's a lot scientists still don't know about "long Covid," the catch-all phrase that describes the 200-plus effects of this virus that can stay with people for months after an infection. But new research may have uncovered a promising treatment for many of the more prevalent symptoms: hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Patients undergoing this treatment, which has been around for decades, get into a pressurized tube where the air pressure is much higher than that of our atmosphere and breathe in concentrated oxygen. It's been used to promote healing in everyone from cancer patients to burn victims. For people with long Covid, hyperbaric oxygen therapy was found to improve energy, sleep, and cognitive function, and decrease depression and pain. While this study was small, it's a promising start to treating a disease that has confounded experts for much of the pandemic. Even figuring out how many people suffer from long Covid has proven challenging. Now, well over two years into the pandemic, it seems that researchers are starting to solve some of these mysteries.
Headlines After an internal review underscored the ways the CDC's Covid response fell short, its director Rochelle Walensky announced that she will reorganize the agency. (CNBC) White House Covid coordinator Dr. Ashish Jha said earlier this week that Omicron-specific Covid boosters will be available to every American over 12 in a few weeks. (NBC) For much of the pandemic, the Marshall Islands have been almost entirely infection-free. But in recent weeks cases have proliferated in the remote Pacific nation. (New York Times) The WHO has reported that new Covid cases dropped 24 percent worldwide, with infections falling everywhere in the world. Deaths have fallen too, but are still higher in some parts of Asia. (ABC) In an attempt to control an outbreak in the coastal Chinese city of Xiamen, officials have ordered that more than five million people—as well as some live seafood coming into the port—get tested.
