Headlines FDA experts say Novavax's shot appears effective but raise some concerns (STAT News) Scientists at the FDA have said that the Covid vaccine made by Novavax is effective at preventing disease, but added that it's unclear how effective the shot is against now-dominant strains. Their analysis also raised concern about the risk of myocarditis and pericarditis, two types of heart inflammation that are also linked to Pfizer/BioNTech's and Moderna's vaccines. Novavax's shot was developed in a more traditional way than its mRNA counterparts, so some think it may be a compelling option for those who are still skeptical about existing shots. An FDA committee will meet on Tuesday to discuss authorization. Beijing reinstates indoor dining and continues opening back up (CNBC) Starting today, Beijing will once again allow indoor dining, resume normal work, and lift traffic bans in most parts of the city, though people will need to show negative PCR results from within 72 hours to enter public spaces or ride on public transit. Since early May, restaurants and bars have only been permitted to serve takeout, and employees in some parts of the city have had to work from home. America has thrown out more than 82 million Covid vaccine doses (NBC) From December 2020 through mid-May, around 82 million doses of the Covid vaccine—11 percent of the shots the government distributed—were thrown away by pharmacies, federal agencies, and US states and territories. These include doses that expired before they could be used, were spoiled when power went out or freezers broke, or had to be thrown out when they hadn't been administered by the end of the day. | |
