Good morning, First a pandemic. Now, a swarm of cicadas. From mid-May to mid-June, billions of Brood X cicadas will rise from the ground in 15 states, plus Washington D.C., across the Eastern and Southern United States. The buzzing insects, which emerge every 17 years, will flood sidewalks, backyards, playgrounds, parks, and other outdoor spaces. I was in New Jersey 17 years ago, and vividly recall the sidewalks being completely coated in cicadas. “They’re a generational event,” Dr. Gene Kritsky, professor of biology at Mount St. Joseph University, tells Inc. The timing is rather unfortunate for businesses with outdoor operations, including those forced outside by the Covid-19 pandemic--especially since Summer 2021 is projected to feature a significant boost in foot traffic for small businesses nationwide. Brigid Horne-Nestor, the master wedding planner at i-do Weddings & Events in Cincinnati, says the pandemic forced a lot of customers to postpone their nuptials in 2020. And this wedding season has brought "cicada fear." You can replace that fear with information. Read our story to learn what to expect from the coming cicada swarm, and how business owners across those 15 states are preparing. |
