It's hard to know who you're going to be talking to when you sit down to interview Grimes. There's Claire Boucher, a scrappy Canadian teen who loved video games; Grimes, the techno musician whose fame blossomed in the 2010s; and right now there's c, who's dabbling in AI and transhumanism (and figuring out how you might teach this concept to babies). All of these personae underlie a very WIRED artist with wide-ranging curiosities whose dreams are as big as the universe will allow. Steven Levy, a self-described "baby boomer who mainlined Dylan," wondered whether they would have anything in common, but their conversation stretched for hours and pinged around subjects ranging from music production and fame to the drawbacks of leaving your children behind to die on Mars. "I think if I died on Earth, in my last moments I would regret it." she says. "If I died in space, I would be like, 'You've lived a great life, you did all the things you wanted to do.'" — Michelle Legro | Deputy Editor, Features |
